My friend Bob made a bold move this week.
He decided to drop friends faster than a speeding bullet.
He started out with well over 4,000 friends on Facebook.
As Facebook devotees know, 5,000 friends is the promised land.
When you reach it, your friend page stops and your life as a fan page begins.
It seems like that process is flawed, so it is better to keep track of your friends and make sure they are real friends and not someone who doesn't add to your experience on Facebook.
Bob took matters into his own hands.
In his own words:
I'll say it again: WHY become friends with someone on FB if you don't interact, answer messages, acknowledge someone's existence, or have the decency to say hello once in a blue moon? Use your heads, folks...."
And the friends, began to drop like pounds off a heavyweight boxer training for the fight of his life.
4,000
3,000
2,000
Some friends began to plead with Bob.
"Don't delete me!"
"Don't delete me, Bob. I may say little to you, but I read your posts. I really do. I love them and it would be so sad for me if I could read them no longer."
But Bob had made up his mind.
He wanted to make a clean break.
He wanted to manage a group of Facebook friends who were dedicated and loyal friends.
If you didn't meet that criteria, you were gone.
Bob continued to rail about those with poor manners, those who ate pancakes with sticky syrup and failed to clean the counter for the next customer.
He barked about the people who walk on trails and leave their trash behind.
He roared about the parents that brought their kids to stores and let them run wild.
Bob was on a mission.
He might not be able to do to something about curbing our national decline in civility.
But he sure could so do something about the loyalty of Facebook friends.
Bob is down to 800 friends and counting.
Did Bob teach you a lesson?
He has me thinking.
And isn't that what life is all about?
