Stengel

My dad went to spring training with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1934. Their new manager was Casey Stengel. Stengel wasn’t yet the genius he would become when he went to the Yankees fifteen years later. He took my dad aside and asked him if he had a backup plan for his career. My dad said he was considering joining the Fire Department with the City of New York. Casey rubbed his chin. “I think you should get started on that---today.”
