My Dad Dominated My Early Life

It was my dad who gave me my storyteller talent.
He wasn't as loquacious as I was, but he had good stories.
I remember most of them and they were damn good.
Dad was perhaps the most honest man I ever met.
He was intimidating and could withhold his love until you hated him like a demon.
But he never owed anyone a dime and was a very confident man.
Life never worked out the way he planned it, but that isn't that true for most?

When dad and mom took me to the Bronx to see my grandfather who had been born in Russia and came to this country just after 1900, it was like a scene from a play.

We would be watching the Yanks play on TV and Grandpa would come in and say: "What are you watching baseball for? What a waste of time? You are wasting your life away!"
And my dad would get in his face and scream: "And 67,000 people at the Stadium are wasting there time too, right pop?
The scared old man would slink back to his bedroom and my Uncle Jack, would choke on a cigarette which led him to 8 heart attacks, would try to alter the mood and get us to eat.
It was all about screaming, eating and family as a boy growing up in the 50's.
But I wouldn't choose this life for myself.
No, I had another life in mind.

Keep your comments on this blog coming and share your Memoir with us!

You don't have to start the way I did today, but use my writing as a model for your first pages.

As I told a student, you might edit several things you write along the way, but when we complete a year of writing, you will have enough for a book yo be most proud of.
