The Word is ANACHRONISM

When I first began teaching EXTRAORDINARY VOCABULARY years ago, I would match vocabulary words, such as today's word ANACHRONISM with word choices in the opposite column.

So my students perused that column looking for the match to ANACHRONISM.

At first, they weren't successful.

This left them unhappy and in some cases, quite agitated.

For you see, I was challenging my students to own the words, not merely rent them.

They were looking for a definition which would include a meaning for ANACHRONISM of OUT OF PLACE, NOT FROM THE SAME TIME PERIOD.

Instead, I gave them I SAW ABRAHAM LINCOLN AT THE YANKEE GAME.

At first, they rebelled.

What does Abraham Lincoln have to do with our vocabulary test?

By the end of the course, they knew.

Abraham Lincoln was our vocavulary test.

Instead of renting the definition of ANACHRONUISM.

They now owned the definition of ANACHRONISM.

And they created their own picture in their minds to commit new words to memory.

And that inspired more pictures.

And more words.

And so on and so on.

Building an EXTRAORDINARY VOCABULARY.

One word at a time.

What about you.

Are you ready to build your EXTRAORDINARY VOCABULARY?

Tell somebody what you have learned here.

I am teaching EXTRAORDINARY VOCABULARY.

One student at a time.
